The annual tests measure Louisiana students’ understanding of the content the state expects them to learn each year. Students in grades 3-8 take English language arts (ELA), math, science and social studies tests, while high schoolers are assessed in English I, English II, algebra I, geometry, biology, U.S. history and civics.

To be considered ready for the next grade, students must reach "mastery" or "advanced" on the tests — the highest of five score levels.
