Another milestone has been reached in Louisiana, but there is still more work to do.
Recently, the Louisiana Department of Education There was a vast improvement across the board throughout the state.
A significant number of students met or exceeded the state expectations in reading and math. These scores show that the investments made in literacy, numeracy and high-dosage tutoring have yielded the results we want.
While there are many people to acknowledge and congratulate for these gains, the bulk of the gratitude must go to the teachers who work directly with students every day. They are the unsung heroes who have done so much with so little to ensure our students reach their full potential. I am sure the teachers appreciate being lauded; however, I am sure that they would much rather receive better compensation.
Recently, from the Minimum Foundation Program (the public school funding mechanism) to subsidize a one-time teacher stipend. I applaud the governor for keeping his promise to teachers. However, I admonish the governor for failing to pursue a permanent solution to teacher pay, and instead relying on an unprecedented budget gimmick that robs Peter to pay Paul.
Education Reform Now understands that this is a unique situation, but our teachers require us to find a sustainable solution that will keep teacher pay competitive as student achievement markers continue to increase. We stand ready to work with all parties to find that solution.
