I write in response to John Taylor's in which he suggests — without offering evidence — that Louisiana has somehow designed its nitrogen hypoxia execution protocol to "maximize agony." (“Is agony unavoidable in gas execution, or is it a deliberate choice?” Letters, July 20.)
Because the letter references aviation, it may be helpful for your readers to hear from someone with firsthand experience. As a pilot with more than 40 years of aviation experience, I have intentionally undergone nitrogen-induced hypoxia training. Such training is an important part of aviation safety because recognizing the early symptoms of oxygen deprivation can enable a pilot to correct the underlying problem before it becomes life-threatening.
The FAA literature the letter cites is correct. Hypoxia — whether caused by nitrogen displacement or any other means — is itself painless. It does not produce the feelings of panic or suffocation associated with a buildup of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.
With nitrogen hypoxia, carbon dioxide does not accumulate in that way. In fact, one of the earliest symptoms is often mild euphoria, a particularly dangerous condition in aviation because it can leave a pilot blissfully unaware that anything is wrong.
Given these well-established physiological effects, it is difficult to understand the letter’s assertion that the state has somehow designed its protocol to make the process more agonizing, even if that were its intent.
Reasonable people can disagree about the morality or wisdom of capital punishment. But regardless of one's position on the death penalty, its history in the United States has generally reflected an effort to reduce unnecessary suffering by adopting methods believed to be more humane than those they replaced.
The debate over capital punishment should be grounded in facts rather than speculation about the physiology of nitrogen hypoxia.
